Q&A with…Spencer Nel

Country: Netherlands

Profession: Director of Global Sports Marketing for Track and Field & Running at adidas

What has been a defining moment in your career?

There isn’t one specific moment.  But I guess contracting an athlete, and then seeing them win a gold medal or break a world record would be defining.  I have had that pleasure over a period of 20 years, and when that happens – like with Wayde van Niekerk in Rio, it is pretty special.

What was the first thought that went through your mind when you heard the Tokyo Olympics had been postponed?

I must admit that I thought they were acting too early.  In hindsight, it was the correct decision, and my reaction was of course naïve.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Nothing noteworthy, but I like spoiling others, so to be extravagant to others is more important for me.  I do love watches though, and have a few which are very special to me

Which superpower would you like to have?

The ability to predict the future.

When under pressure, what do you say to yourself to help you get through it?

BREATHE and BELIEVE

What three things you would take with if you were to be stranded on a desert island for a year?

A knife, a tent and some fishing line – but I would only agree to go if I was allowed to take my family with me!!
